What is the meaning of hdpe geomembrane?

HDPE Geomembrane or high density polyethylene geomembrane, is a waterproofing membrane liner used in a wide range of lining applications including landfill, mining, aquaculture, etc. that requires low impermeability, high tensile strength, uv resistance, chemical resistance and durability.

HDPE geomembrane has the following characteristics and definitions:

Material: HDPE geomembrane  is made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which has high tensile strength and puncture resistance.

Waterproofing: HDPE geomembrane liner has excellent waterproofing properties, effectively preventing the penetration of water and avoiding erosion and damage to the soil by moisture.

Isolation: HDPE smooth/ textured geomembrane can be used as an isolation layer for soil, separating soils with different properties and particle sizes, preventing them from mixing and infiltrating, and maintaining the stability of the soil.

Reinforcement: HDPE liner geomembrane can be used for soil reinforcement, improving the strength and stability of the soil. It forms a composite structure with the soil, increasing the tensile and shear strength of the soil.

Chemical resistance: HDPE liners has good resistance to certain chemicals, providing protection against corrosion from acids, alkalis, saline water, and other substances to a certain extent.

1)According to the appearance, HDPE Geomembrane sheet will be divided into

Smooth hdpe membrane: Smooth geomembrane liners is the most widely used waterproofing geomembrane with applications of ponds, dams, reservoirs, pools, etc in the more flat areas. It has a smooth, continuous surface without any intentional texturing.

Textured hdpe membrane. The hdpe textured geomembrane liners is usually used in the slopes of mining, landfills liner because of its larger friction index. The textured surface is typically achieved during the manufacturing process by embossing or calendering techniques.

2)According to materials, the hdpe geomembrane will be divided into

virgin hdpe membrane:Virgin material means the material is 100% new, never used, so it is more widely used but more expensive.

Recycled hdpe membrane. Recycled material means the repeat used material. This will shorten the lifetime of geomembrane but with lower cost.

5)According to thickness, the hdpe geomembrane will be classified from 0.15mm to 3.0mm. The most widely used geomembrane thickness is

Jingwei’s HDPE Geomembrane Production

The production method Jingwei used for high density polyethylene geomembrane is the blown film method. This method allows for the production of geomembrane lining with uniform thickness, good physical properties, and large dimensions. But precise control and monitoring of temperature, pressure, extrusion speed, and cooling are necessary to ensure the quality and performance of the geomembrane sheet. It involves a series of steps as follows:

Raw material preparation: HDPE resin is prepared according to a specific formulation and undergoes a drying process to ensure its quality and flowability.

Melting and extrusion: The dried HDPE resin is fed into the extruder of a blown film machine, where it is melted. The resin is pushed by a screw from the feeding zone towards the exit end of the barrel.

Tubular film formation: The molten resin enters the annular cavity of the die head, also known as the ring-shaped mold. Simultaneously, compressed air is introduced through the central channel of the die head, forming a tubular film.

Tube expansion: By adjusting the air pressure at the top of the die head and the extrusion speed of the tube, the resin tube gradually expands under the influence of the air, while maintaining a uniform thickness.

Cooling and solidification: While the tube expands, it passes through a cooling device, where it rapidly cools and solidifies. Cooling is typically achieved using cold air or water.

Edge trimming and cutting: After solidification, the edges of the tube are trimmed using a cutting device to achieve a smooth shape and remove excess material.

Flattening and winding: The trimmed geosynthetic membrane is flattened using a flattening device and then wound into rolls using a winding device for transportation and use.

What is the difference between HDPE and LLDPE Geomembrane?

Both Jingwei’s HDPE geomembrane and LLDPE geomembrane liners are polyethylene (PE) plastic waterproofing barriers produced by the same product line named three-layer co-extrusion blow molding machine. Colors can be customized as black geomembrane, white geomembrane liner, blue PE membranes, etc.

The main difference between HDPE Geomembrane sheet and LLDPE geomembrane lining is their molecular structure and properties. The full name of HDPE Geomembrane is High Density Polyethylene Geomembrane while LLDPE Geomembranes is Linear Low Density Polyethylene Geomembrane. The HDPE material is stronger with higher density than LLDPE material so that the HDPE Geomembrane has higher mechanical properties of tensile strength, tear resistance and puncture resistance. All these properties make HDPE Membrane more suitable for projects that higher strength needed. But the LLDPE material is more flexible with lower density than the HDPE material so that LLDPE has a higher mechanical property of elongation at break. This property make LLDPE Lining more suitable for projects that flexibility is required.

Which is better, HDPE Geomembrane or LLDPE Geommebrane?

Both HDPE Membrane & LLDPE Geomembranes have their advantages and disadvantages by themselves. They are commonly used in the applications such as pond, landfill, mining, etc. But how to choose the geomembran, whether to use HDPE sheet or the lldpe liner geomembrane?  It depends on the specific application and requirements of projects.

If higher strength and longer lifespan is required in the projects, hdpe linings is better to be used.

If flexibility and higher elongation at break is needed in applications, geomembrane with lldpe material will be better.

What is the difference between hdpe geomembrane and pvc geomembrane?

Both  geomembrane hdpe and pvc geomembrane can be used in the lining of pond, mining, and other geosynthetic or engineering construction.

The main difference between pvc geomembrane and hdpe geomembrane are as following:


PVC refers to polyvinyl chloride

HDPE refers to high-density polyethylene

PVC is more flexible than hdpe, but with a lower tensile strength than hdpe.

2)Chemical resistance

Both pvc geomembrane liner and smooth hdpe liner are withstand chemicals. But hdpe lining with a higher resistance than pvc pond liner.

3)UV resistance.HDPE membrane has a better usage in this respect.

4)Price Geomembrane: PVC geomembrane is more expensive than hdpe liner geomembrane.

5)Size: The size of pvc geo membrane is much smaller than hdpe geo membrane due to its production.

6)Safety: Jingwei’s HDPE Liner Geomembrane is food grade, which is much safe for some special applications like fish or shrimp pond liners& drinking water system. But pvc pond liner is susceptible to degradation or chemical reactions when exposed to certain substances, leading to reduced performance or potential failure.

What’s the difference between hdpe virgin material and recycled material?

Jingwei’s HDPE Geomembrane Liners (Thickness 0.15mm-3,0mm) are the plastic sheets or hdpe films of geosynthetic materials used for containment of liquids or chemicals. They are commonly made from hdpe virgin materials or recycled materials, sometimes by mixing them together to meet requirements of different projects or due to the economic reasons.

1)Raw material used: Virgin HDPE membrane uses imported brand-new high-density polyethylene resin particles as the main raw material, while recycled HDPE geomembrane uses recycled particles produced by small domestic or international factories.

2)Standard difference: virgin HDPE membrane can meet the requirements of GM13 standard or even higher standards, while recycled high-density polyethylene geomembrane cannot meet the standard requirement.

3)Physical property difference: Virgin new HDPE liner geomembrane has higher physical properties compared to recycled HDPE geomembrane, including tensile strength, yield strength, penetration force, tear strength, and other aspects.

4)Chemical property difference: Virgin HDPE liner geomembrane exhibits better chemical properties than recycled HDPE geomembrane in terms of crack resistance, aging resistance, UV resistance, salt resistance, acid-alkali resistance, corrosion resistance, high-temperature resistance, low-temperature resistance, and others.

5)Appearance difference: Brand-new HDPE membrane has a smooth, glossy appearance and good flexibility, while recycled HDPE geomembrane has a relatively inferior appearance.

6)Lifespan difference: The lifespan of virgin new material HDPE membrane is generally over 50 years underground, while the lifespan of recycled HDPE geomembrane does not exceed 50 years.

7)Price difference: In general, the price of virgin HDPE membrane is higher than that of recycled HDPE geomembrane of the same thickness.

What is hdpe liner used for?

HDPE geomembrane has a wide range of applications in engineering, such as:

1)Landfills Liners: HDPE geomembrane liner is widely used as a liner in landfill sites. It effectively prevents waste from leaching into groundwater and soil, reducing the risk of environmental contamination.

2)Liquid storage ponds: HDPE liner geomembranes can be used in the construction of liquid storage ponds, such as sewage treatment ponds. It provides excellent impermeable protection, preventing liquids from leaking into the surrounding environment.

3)Road and railway construction: HDPE geomembrane can be used as a waterproof and impermeable layer in road and railway construction. It prevents groundwater from infiltrating into the subgrade or railway base, improving the stability and durability of the infrastructure.

Which thickness of the hdpe geomembrane is good enough for project ?

The geomembrane waterproof are usually used in the applications like landfill, mining, biogas, aquaculture fish/shrimp farming ponds, agricultural ponds, dams liners, irrigation pond liners, etc.

Among them, the thickness of hdpe geomembrane mainly used in large landfill sites is at least 2.0mm, while in small landfill sites, 1.5mm HDPE liner is generally used. The impermeable geomembrane liner used in power plants and ash disposal sites is mainly 1.5mm thickness or above 1.5mm. HDPE geomembrane lining used in regulating ponds and biogas digesters is 1.0mm thickness or above. In small reservoirs and aquaculture, 0.5mm geomembrane hdpe is mainly used. Some customers consider the total cost and use around 0.3mm hdpe geomembrane sheets.

When selecting the appropriate thickness of HDPE geomembrane for different engineering applications, the following factors should be considered:

1)Project requirements: Different engineering applications have varying thickness requirements for hdpe geomembranes. Refer to relevant specifications and design standards to understand the minimum thickness requirements for the project. For example, a landfill site may require a thicker geomembrane to address the risk of waste leakage.

2)Anticipated stress and load: Consider the stress and load that the hdpe geomembrane sheet will be subjected to. For instance, in liquid storage ponds or hydraulic engineering projects, if the hdpe sheet needs to withstand significant water pressure or soil pressure, a thicker hdpe sheet liner may be necessary to ensure sufficient strength and stability.

3)Soil conditions: Evaluate the soil conditions at the project site. Different types of soil may have varying impacts on the permeability and durability of the geomembranes. For example, soils with sharp particles or high moisture content may require a thicker geomembrane to provide better impermeability.

4)Environmental factors: Consider the environmental factors at the project site, such as temperature variations and UV radiation. Certain environmental conditions may affect the performance of the geomembrane. For instance, under high temperatures and intense UV exposure, a thicker geomembrane hdpe may be required to withstand oxidation and aging.

5)Economic considerations: Balance the desired performance with cost factors. Thicker anti-seepage geomembranes typically increase material costs, so it is necessary to consider the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of the project.
