What are Geosynthetics?
Geosynthetics are specialized materials used in civil engineering and foundation projects with the aim of reinforcing soil, improving soil properties, enhancing soil stability, and increasing load-bearing capacity. These geotechnical materials are commonly found in areas such as roadbeds, slope projects, seepage control projects, and foundation treatments to address issues related to soil stability, consolidation reinforcement, seepage control, and erosion resistance. Primarily composed of synthetic fibers, rubber, resins, and minerals, these geosynthetic materials are processed through special manufacturing techniques. Widely applied in civil, hydraulic, environmental, and transportation engineering, the geosynthetics serve to enhance soil mechanics, improve stability, load-bearing capacity, and resistance to seepage, meeting the diverse requirements of various engineering constructions.
What are Type of Geosynthetics?
Geosynthetics are an indispensable part of modern engineering construction with a wide range of applications and diverse types, which includes geotextiles, geomembranes, geogrids, and geosynthetic materials.
1.Geotextiles
Geotextiles are high-strength, corrosion-resistant, aging-resistant, and UV radiation-resistant engineering materials used primarily for soil reinforcement, anti-seepage, and erosion resistance. Common geotextiles include polyester geotextiles, polypropylene geotextiles, and polyethylene geotextiles.
Applications: Roadways, railways, retaining walls, and landfill liners.

2.Geomembranes
Geomembranes are engineering materials with high strength, toughness, aging resistance, corrosion resistance, high and low-temperature resistance, waterproofing, anti-seepage, and anti-evaporation properties. They are mainly used in hydraulic engineering, transportation engineering, and environmental engineering. Common geomembranes include PVC geomembranes, HDPE geomembranes shet, and LDPE geomembranes and LLDPE Geomembrane liners.
Applications: Landfill liners, reservoirs, wastewater treatment ponds, biogas, aquaculture pond liner, dam liner, etc

3.Geocells
Geocells are three-dimensional honeycomb structures that can be filled with soil, gravel, or other materials to stabilize steep slopes and prevent erosion. Made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), they feature an open-cell structure that allows them to adapt to terrain. Geocells offer advantages such as being robust, durable, tough, and weather-resistant.
Applications: Slope stabilization, channel protection, heavy-load support.

4.Geomats
Three-dimensional geomats are mesh structures made of high-density polyethylene plastic. They play a crucial role in environmental management and ecological restoration by stabilizing soil, preventing soil erosion, averting slope failures, increasing vegetation coverage, and promoting plant growth.

5.GCLs
Bentonite Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCL), are a novel type of geotechnical synthetic material. They are composed of graded natural sodium-based bentonite particles mixed with corresponding additives. Through a needle-punching process and equipment, these bentonite particles are fixed between geotextiles and woven plastic fabric to form sheet-like waterproof rolls. GCLs exhibit all the characteristics of geotechnical materials while also demonstrating exceptional waterproofing properties.
As an innovative environmentally friendly composite anti-seepage material, sodium-based bentonite waterproof blankets have been widely used in civil engineering projects such as water conservancy, environmental protection, transportation, railways, and civil aviation due to their unique anti-seepage performance. They are employed in foundational treatments and capping of landfill sites, waterproofing of artificial lakes, reservoirs, channels, rivers, and rooftop gardens, as well as in anti-seepage measures for underground structures like basements, subways, tunnels, and underground passages.
Applications: Landfill caps, pond liners, secondary containment.

6.Geogrids
Geogrids are spatial mesh structure materials primarily made of polymer materials through stretching, extrusion, and other processes. They are mainly used for soil reinforcement, protection, filtration, and other purposes. Common geogrids include unixial pp plastic geogrids, biaxial plastic pp geogrids, fiberglass geogrids, polyester geogrid and steel-plastic geogrids.
Applications: Retaining walls, embankments, paved/unpaved roads.

7.Drainage Products:
7.1Drainage Net
Composite drainage net, also named geocomposite, is a novel geotechnical drainage material made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) using a special extrusion molding process.
The composite drainage net features a three-layer special structure with a high-strength steel bar in the middle, vertically arranged to form drainage channels. The steel bars arranged in a cross pattern above and below provide support to prevent geotextiles from embedding into the drainage channels, ensuring high drainage performance even under heavy loads. When combined with double-sided adhesive permeable geotextiles, it exhibits comprehensive performance of “filtration, drainage, ventilation, and protection.” It can replace traditional sand and gravel layers and is currently an ideal drainage material.
The composite drainage net is primarily utilized in projects such as landfill sites, highway subgrades and road drainage, railway tunnel drainage, underground drainage structures, as well as drainage in gardens and sports fields.

7.2Drainage Cells
Drainage cells are a type of construction drainage material made from polypropylene (PP), known for its resistance to aging, corrosion, and high durability. These plastic crates are block-shaped permeable drainage materials, measuring 500mm x 500mm x 30mm, with specialized interlocking grooves and slots along the edges for easy installation, making construction efficient, time-saving, and effortless.

7.3Drainage Board
Drainage boards are typically made of materials such as plastic or rubber, providing a certain level of elasticity and durability. Their surfaces often feature numerous small holes or grooves, enhancing drainage capacity to swiftly channel rainwater through the boards into drainage systems. Serving as a common construction material, drainage boards play a vital role in construction projects. Their primary function is drainage, efficiently guiding rainwater from building surfaces to drainage systems or other water outlets, preventing waterlogging, and safeguarding the structure and appearance of buildings.
